Learn about the holidays and traditions celebrated in England.

Whilst Scotland celebrate St. Andrew’s Day, and Ireland have St. Patrick’s Day, England celebrate St. George’s Day. The legend says St. George was a Roman soldier who slayed a dragon and saved a princess.

The British King or Queen has a second birthday in summer time! This tradition comes from Britain’s often rainy weather. The monarch will have an unofficial birthday celebration in the Summer months where the grand royal birthday parade will hopefully be sunny!

Bonfire Night

In 1605, a group of men thought up a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament to kill the King. Before the explosive gun-powder was ignited, a man named Guy Fawkes was caught and the plot was foiled. On this day bonfires were lit to burn models of Guy Fawkes to celebrate the safety of the King. Today we still celebrate bonfire night with bonfires, fireworks, and food.

Boxing Day

The day after Christmas is a national holiday and is often spent eating Christmas left-overs with our families. A long time ago, servants to the wealthy would be given Boxing Day to spend with their familes as they would have worked through Christmas time.

Have you ever worn a poppy or had two minutes of silence? These are traditions for Remembrance Day, which marks the end of WW1. We often take this time to think of everyone who has fought for us in any war or conflict.
